haYashar Jasher 65

1 a:

And it came to pass after these things, that all the counsellors of Pharaoh, one reigning of Mits'rayim (4714), and all the elders of Mits'rayim (4714) assembled and came before the one reigning and bowed down to the ground, and they sat before him.

2 b:

And the counsellors and elders of Mits'rayim (4714) spoke unto the one reigning, saying,

3 g:

Behold the people of the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) is greater and mightier than we are, and you know all the evil which they did to us in the road when we returned from battle.

4 d:

And thou hast also seen their strong power, for this power is unto them from their fathers, for but a few men stood up against a people numerous as the sand, and smote them at the edge of the sword, and of themselves not one has fallen, so that if they had been numerous they would then have utterly destroyed them.

5 h:

Now therefore give us counsel what to do with them, until we gradually destroy them from amongst us, lest they become too numerous for us in the land.

6 w:

For if the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) should increase in the land, they will become an obstacle to us, and if any war should happen to take place, they with their great strength will join our enemy against us, and fight against us, destroy us from the land and go away from it.

7 z:

So the one answered the elders of Mits'rayim (4714) and said unto them, This is the plan advised against Yis'ra'el (3478), from which we will not depart,

8 x:

Behold in the land are Pitom (6619) and Ra'm'ses (7406), cities unfortified against battle, it behooves you and us to build them, and to fortify them.

9 j:

Now therefore go you also and act cunningly toward them, and proclaim a voice in Mits'rayim (4714) and in Goshen (1657) at the command of the one reigning, saying,

10 y:

All ye men of Mits'rayim (4714), Goshen (1657), Pat'ros (6624) and all their inhabitants! the one reigning has commanded us to build Pitom (6619) and Ra'm'ses (7406), and to fortify them for battle; who amongst you of all Mits'rayim (4714), of the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) and of all the inhabitants of the cities, are willing to build with us, shall each have his wages given to him daily at the order of one reigning; so go you first and do cunningly, and gather yourselves and come to Pitom (6619) and Ra'm'ses (7406) to build.

11 ay:

And whilst you are building, cause a proclamation of this kind to be made throughout Mits'rayim (4714) every day at the command of the one.

12 by:

And when some of the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) shall come to build with you, you shall give them their wages daily for a few days.

13 gy:

And after they shall have built with you for their daily hire, drag yourselves away from them daily one by one in secret, and then you shall rise up and become their task-masters and officers, and you shall leave them afterward to build without wages, and should they refuse, then force them with all your might to build.

14 dy:

And if you do this it will be well with us to strengthen our land against the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), for on account of the fatigue of the building and the work, the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) will decrease, because you will deprive them from their wives day by day.

15 hj:

And all the elders of Mits'rayim (4714) heard the counsel of the one, and the counsel seemed good in their eyes and in the eyes of the servants of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all Mits'rayim (4714), and they did according to the word of the one.

16 wj:

And all the servants went away from the one, and they caused a proclamation to be made in all Mits'rayim (4714), in Tachpanches (8471) and in Goshen (1657), and in all the cities which surrounded Mits'rayim (4714), saying,

17 zy:

You have seen what the sons of Esav (6215) and Yish'ma'el (3458) did to us, who came to war against us and wished to destroy us.

18 xy:

Now therefore the one commanded us to fortify the land, to build the cities Pitom (6619) and Ra'm'ses (7406), and to fortify them for battle, if they should again come against us.

19 jy:

Whosoever of you from all Mits'rayim (4714) and from the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) will come to build with us, he shall have his daily wages given by the one, as his command is unto us.

20 k:

And when Mits'rayim (4714) and all the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) heard all that the servants of Pharaoh had spoken, there came from Mits'rayim (4714), and the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) to build with the servants of Pharaoh, Pitom (6619) and Ra'm'ses (7406), but none of the sons of Levi (3878) came with their brethren to build.

21 ak:

And all the servants of Pharaoh and his princes came at first with deceit to build with all Yis'ra'el (3478) as daily hired laborers, and they gave to Yis'ra'el (3478) their daily hire at the beginning.

22 bk:

And the servants of Pharaoh built with all Yis'ra'el (3478), and were employed in that work with Yis'ra'el (3478) for a month.

23 gk:

And at the end of the month, all the servants of Pharaoh began to withdraw secretly from the people of Yis'ra'el (3478) daily.

24 dk:

And Yis'ra'el (3478) went on with the work at that time, but they then received their daily hire, because some of the men of Mits'rayim (4714) were yet carrying on the work with Yis'ra'el (3478) at that time; therefore Mits'rayim (4714) gave Yis'ra'el (3478) their hire in those days, in order that they, Mits'rayim (4714) their fellow-workmen, might also take the pay for their labor.

25 hk:

And at the end of a year and four months all Mits'rayim (4714) had withdrawn from the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), so that the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) were left alone engaged in the work.

26 wk:

And after all Mits'rayim (4714) had withdrawn from the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) they returned and became oppressors and officers over them, and some of them stood over the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) as task masters, to receive from them all that they gave them for the pay of their labor.

27 zk:

And Mits'rayim (4714) did in this manner to the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) day by day, in order to afflict in their work.

28 xk:

And all the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) were alone engaged in the labor, and Mits'rayim (4714) refrained from giving any pay to the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) from that time forward.

29 jk:

And when some of the men of Yis'ra'el (3478) refused to work on account of the wages not being given to them, then the exactors and the servants of Pharaoh oppressed them and smote them with heavy blows, and made them return by force, to labor with their brethren; thus did all Mits'rayim (4714) unto the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) all the days.

30 l:

And all the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) were greatly afraid of Mits'rayim (4714) in this matter, and all the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) returned and worked alone without pay.

31 al:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) built Pitom (6619) and Ra'm'ses (7406), and all the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) did the work, some making bricks, and some building, and the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) built and fortified all the land of Mits'rayim (4714) and its walls, and the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) were engaged in work for many years, until the time came when Y'hovah (3068) Elohim (430) remembered them and brought them out of Mits'rayim (4714).

32 bl:

But the sons of Levi (3878) were not employed in the work with their brethren of Yis'ra'el (3478), from the beginning unto the day of their going forth from Mits'rayim (4714).

33 gl:

For all the sons of Levi (3878) knew that Mits'rayim (4714) had spoken all these words with deceit to Yis'ra'el (3478), therefore the sons of Levi (3878) refrained from approaching to the work with their brethren.

34 dl:

And Mits'rayim (4714) did not direct their attention to make the sons of Levi (3878) work afterward, since they had not been with their brethren at the beginning, therefore Mits'rayim (4714) left them alone.

35 hl:

And the hands of the men of Mits'rayim (4714) were directed with continued severity against the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) in that work, and Mits'rayim (4714) made the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) work with rigor.

36 wl:

And Mits'rayim (4714) embittered the lives of the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) with hard work, in mortar and bricks, and also in all manner of work in the field.

37 zl:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) called Melol the one of Mits'rayim (4714) "Meror, one of Mits'rayim (4714)," because in his days Mits'rayim (4714) had embittered their lives with all manner of work.

38 xl:

And all the work wherein Mits'rayim (4714) made the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) labor, they exacted with rigor, in order to afflict the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), but the more they afflicted them, the more they increased and grew, and Mits'rayim (4714) were grieved because of the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478).
