haYashar Jasher 85

1 a:

And king Arad the K'na'anim (3669), who dwelt in the south, heard that the Yis'ra'eli (3478) had come by the way of the spies, and he arranged his forces to fight against the Yis'ra'eli (3478).

2 b:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) were greatly afraid of him, for he had a great and heavy army, so the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) resolved to return to Mits'rayim (4714).

3 g:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) turned back about the distance of three days' journey unto Maserath Beni Jaakon, for they were greatly afraid on account of the king Arad.

4 d:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) would not get back to their places, so they remained in Beni Jaakon for thirty days.

5 h:

And when the children of Levi (3878) saw that the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) would not turn back, they were jealous for the sake of Y'hovah (3068), and they rose up and fought against the Yis'ra'eli (3478) their brethren, and slew of them a great body, and forced them to turn back to their place, Mount Hor (2023).

6 w:

And when they returned, king Arad was still arranging his host for battle against the Yis'ra'eli (3478).

7 z:

And Yis'ra'el (3478) vowed a vow, saying, If thou wilt deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

8 x:

And Y'hovah (3068) hearkened to the voice of Yis'ra'el (3478), and he delivered the K'na'anim (3669) into their hand, and he utterly destroyed them and their cities, and he called the name of the place Hormah.

9 j:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) journeyed from Mount Hor (2023) and pitched in Ovot (88), and they journeyed from Ovot (88) and they pitched at Iyey haAvarim (5863), in the border of Mo'av (4124).

10 y:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) sent to Mo'av (4124), saying, Let us pass now through thy land into our place, but the children of Mo'av (4124) would not suffer the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) to pass through their land, for the children of Mo'av (4124) were greatly afraid lest the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) should do unto them as Sichon (5511) one reigning of the Emori (567) had done to them, who had taken their land and had slain many of them.

11 ay:

Therefore Mo'av (4124) would not suffer the Yis'ra'eli (3478) to pass through his land, and Y'hovah (3068) commanded the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), saying, That they should not fight against Mo'av (4124), so the Yis'ra'eli (3478) removed from Mo'av (4124).

12 by:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) journeyed from the border of Mo'av (4124), and they came to the other side of Ar'non (769), the border of Mo'av (4124), between Mo'av (4124) and the Emori (567), and they pitched in the border of Sichon (5511), one reigning of the Emori (567), in the wilderness of Kedemoth.

13 gy:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) sent messengers to Sichon (5511), one reigning of the Emori (567), saying,

14 dy:

Let us pass through thy land, we will not turn into the fields or into the vineyards, we will go along by the king's highway until we shall have passed thy border, but Sichon (5511) would not suffer the Yis'ra'eli (3478) to pass.

15 hj:

So Sichon (5511) collected all the people of the Emori (567) and went forth into the wilderness to meet the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), and he fought against Yis'ra'el (3478) in Jahaz.

16 wj:

And Y'hovah (3068) delivered Sichon (5511) one reigning of the Emori (567) into the hand of the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), and Yis'ra'el (3478) smote all the people of Sichon (5511) with the edge of the sword and avenged the cause of Mo'av (4124).

17 zy:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) took possession of the land of Sichon (5511) from Aram (758) unto Yaboq (2999), unto the children of Amon (5983), and they took all the spoil of the cities.

18 xy:

And Yis'ra'el (3478) took all these cities, and Yis'ra'el (3478) dwelt in all the cities of the Emori (567).

19 jy:

And all the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) resolved to fight against the children of Amon (5983), to take their land also.

20 k:

So Y'hovah (3068) said to the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), Do not besiege the children of Amon (5983), neither stir up battle against them, for I will give nothing to you of their land, and the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) hearkened to the word of Y'hovah (3068), and did not fight against the children of Amon (5983).

21 ak:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) turned and went up by the way of Bashan (1316) to the land of Og (5747), one reigning of Bashan (1316), and Og (5747) the one reigning of Bashan (1316) went out to meet the Yis'ra'eli (3478) in battle, and he had with him many valiant men, and a very strong force from the people of the Emori (567).

22 bk:

And Og (5747) one reigning of Bashan (1316) was a very powerful man, but Naharon his son was exceedingly powerful, even stronger than he was.

23 gk:

And Og (5747) said in his heart, Behold now the whole camp of Yis'ra'el (3478) takes up a space of three parsa, now will I smite them at once without sword or spear.

24 dk:

And Og (5747) went up Mount Jahaz, and took therefrom one large stone, the length of which was three parsa, and he placed it on his head, and resolved to throw it upon the camp of the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), to smite all the Yis'ra'eli (3478) with that stone.

25 hk:

And the angel of Y'hovah (3068) came and pierced the stone upon the head of Og, and the stone fell upon the neck of Og (5747) that Og (5747) fell to the earth on account of the weight of the stone upon his neck.

26 wk:

At that time Y'hovah (3068) said to the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), Be not afraid of him, for I have given him and all his people and all his land into your hand, and you shall do to him as you did to Sichon (5511).

27 zk:

And Mosheh (4872) went down to him with a small number of the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), and Mosheh (4872) smote Og (5747) with a stick at the ankles of his feet and slew him.

28 xk:

The sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) afterward pursued the children of Og (5747) and all his people, and they beat and destroyed them till there was no remnant left of them.

29 jk:

Mosheh (4872) afterward sent some of the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) to spy out Jaazer, for Jaazer was a very famous city.

30 l:

And the spies went to Jaazer and explored it, and the spies trusted in Y'hovah (3068), and they fought against the men of Jaazer.

31 al:

And these men took Jaazer and its villages, and Y'hovah (3068) delivered them into their hand, and they drove out the Emori (567) who had been there.

32 bl:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) took the land of the two kings of the Emori (567), sixty cities which were on the other side of Yar'den (3383), from the brook of Ar'non (769) unto Mount Herman.

33 gl:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) journeyed and came into the plain of Mo'av (4124) which is on this side of Yar'den (3383), by Y'richo (3405).

34 dl:

And the children of Mo'av (4124) heard all the evil which the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) had done to the two kings of the Emori (567), to Sichon (5511) and Og (5747), so all the men of Mo'av (4124) were greatly afraid of the Yis'ra'eli (3478).

35 hl:

And the elders of Mo'av (4124) said, Behold the two kings of the Emori (567), Sichon (5511) and Og (5747), who were more powerful than all the kings of the earth, could not stand against the children of Yis'ra'el (3478), how then can we stand before them?

36 wl:

Surely they sent us a message before now to pass through our land on their way, and we would not suffer them, now they will turn upon us with their heavy swords and destroy us; and Mo'av (4124) was distressed on account of the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), and they were greatly afraid of them, and they counselled together what was to be done to the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478).

37 zl:

And the elders of Mo'av (4124) resolved and took one of their men, Balaq (1111) the son of Tsipor (6834) the Mo'avi (4124), and made him king over them at that time, and Balaq (1111) was a very wise man.

38 xl:

And the elders of Mo'av (4124) rose up and sent to the children of Mid'yan (4080) to make peace with them, for a great battle and enmity had been in those days between Mo'av (4124) and Mid'yan (4080), from the days of Hadad (1908) the son of B'dad (911) one reigning of Edom (123), who smote Mid'yan (4080) in the field of Mo'av (4124), unto these days.

39 jl:

And the children of Mo'av (4124) sent to the children of Mid'yan (4080), and they made peace with them, and the elders of Mid'yan (4080) came to the land of Mo'av (4124) to make peace in behalf of the children of Mid'yan (4080).

40 m:

And the elders of Mo'av (4124) counselled with the elders of Mid'yan (4080) what to do in order to save their lives from Yis'ra'el (3478).

41 am:

And all the children of Mo'av (4124) said to the elders of Mid'yan (4080), Now therefore the children of Yis'ra'el (3478) lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field, for thus did they do to the two kings of the Emori (567) who are stronger than we are.

42 bm:

And the elders of Mid'yan (4080) said to Mo'av (4124), We have heard that at the time when Sichon (5511) king of the Emori (567) fought against you, when he prevailed over you and took your land, he had sent to B'or (1160) the son of Janeas and to Bil'am (1109) his son from Mesopotamia, and they came and cursed you; therefore did the hand of Sichon (5511) prevail over you, that he took your land.

43 gm:

Now therefore send you also to Bil'am (1109) his son, for he still remains in his land, and give him his hire, that he may come and curse all the people of whom you are afraid; so the elders of Mo'av (4124) heard this thing, and it pleased them to send to Bil'am (1109) the son of B'or (1160).

44 dm:

So Balaq (1111) the son of Tsipor (6834) one reigning of Mo'av (4124) sent messengers to Bil'am (1109), saying,

45 hm:

Behold there is a people come out from Mits'rayim (4714), behold they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me.

46 wm:

Now therefore come and curse this people for me, for they are too mighty for me, peradventure I shall prevail to fight against them, and drive them out, for I heard that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and whom thou cursest is cursed.

47 zm:

So the messengers of Balaq (1111) went to Bil'am (1109) and brought Bil'am (1109) to curse the people to fight against Mo'av (4124).

48 xm:

And Bil'am (1109) came to Balaq (1111) to curse Yis'ra'el (3478), and Y'hovah (3068) said to Bil'am (1109), Curse not this people for it is blessed.

49 jm:

And Balaq (1111) urged Bil'am (1109) day by day to curse Yis'ra'el (3478), but Bil'am (1109) hearkened not to Balaq (1111) on account of the word of Y'hovah (3068) which he had spoken to Bil'am (1109).

50 n:

And when Balaq (1111) saw that Bil'am (1109) would not accede to his wish, he rose up and went home, and Bil'am (1109) also returned to his land and he went from there to Mid'yan (4080).

51 an:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) journeyed from the plain of Mo'av (4124), and pitched by Yar'den (3383) from Beth-jesimoth even unto Abel-shittim, at the end of the plains of Mo'av (4124).

52 bn:

And when the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) abode in the plain of Shitim (7851), they began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Mo'av (4124).

53 gn:

And the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) approached Mo'av (4124), and the children of Mo'av (4124) pitched their tents opposite to the camp of the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478).

54 dn:

And the children of Mo'av (4124) were afraid of the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), and the children of Mo'av (4124) took all their daughters and their wives of beautiful aspect and comely appearance, and dressed them in gold and silver and costly garments.

55 hn:

And the children of Mo'av (4124) seated those women at the door of their tents, in order that the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) might see them and turn to them, and not fight against Mo'av (4124).

56 wn:

And all the children of Mo'av (4124) did this thing to the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478), and every man placed his wife and daughter at the door of his tent, and all the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) saw the act of the children of Mo'av (4124), and the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478) turned to the daughters of Mo'av (4124) and coveted them, and they went to them.

57 zn:

And it came to pass that when a Hebrew came to the door of the tent of Mo'av (4124), and saw a daughter of Mo'av (4124) and desired her in his heart, and spoke with her at the door of the tent that which he desired, whilst they were speaking together the men of the tent would come out and speak to the Hebrew like unto these words:

58 xn:

Surely you know that we are brethren, we are all the descendants of Lot (3876) and the descendants of Av'raham (85) his brother, wherefore then will you not remain with us, and wherefore will you not eat our bread and our sacrifice?

59 jn:

And when the children of Mo'av (4124) had thus overwhelmed him with their speeches, and enticed him by their flattering words, they seated him in the tent and cooked and sacrificed for him, and he ate of their sacrifice and of their bread.

60 s:

They then gave him wine and he drank and became intoxicated, and they placed before him a beautiful damsel, and he did with her as he liked, for he knew not what he was doing, as he had drunk plentifully of wine.

61 as:

Thus did the children of Mo'av (4124) to Yis'ra'el (3478) in that place, in the plain of Shitim (7851), and the anger of Y'hovah (3068) was kindled against Yis'ra'el (3478) on account of this matter, and he sent a pestilence amongst them, and there died of the Yis'ra'eli (3478) twenty-four thousand men.

62 bs:

Now there was a man of the children of Shim'on (8095) whose name was Zim'ri (2174), the son of Salu (5543), who connected himself with the Mid'yanit (4080) Koz'bi (3579), the daughter of Tsur (6698), one reigning of Mid'yan (4080), in the sight of all the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478).

63 gs:

And Pin'chas (6372) the son of El'azar (499), the son of Aharon (175) the priest, saw this wicked thing which Zim'ri (2174) had done, and he took a spear and rose up and went after them, and pierced them both and slew them, and the pestilence ceased from the sons of Yis'ra'el (3478).
